Over the coming weeks, I will be naming what I believe to be the best of the centuries, 20 and 21 in all things music. To start things off, one of the greatest written songs, one of those that defined the 90's and will never be forgotten.
Oasis' 'Wonderwall' is as of 2008, 76th in the UK's best selling singles of all time. Released as the third single from (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? in October 1995, “Wonderwall” peaked at number two in the UK Singles Charts and proved to be their American breakthrough, reaching number eight on the Hot 100 and giving them their only top-ten hit in the US thus far.
What made this song memorable? The emotional lyrics (That the fire in your heart is out, I'm sure you've heard it all before, But you never really had a doubt), the smooth guitar riffs, the peak of Britpop or was it a mixture of all this? Did the English people feel they needed a song to represent how they felt at the time?
I believe Oasis had managed to with every word, every strum and beat, what was needed in music. The release in 1995 brings back many memories for those who can remember it, it was when Diana Spencer said the immortal words, "There were three people in my marriage," in that Panorama interview (the most watching TV item in Britain ever!) or when OJ Simpson was given freedom with a 'not guilty' verdict or the death of notorious gang leader, Ronnie Kray.
A lot happened in that year and 'Wonderwall' reverberated through the rest of the 90's and still to the current day.
Up to date, Oasis have just released their new LP, 'Dig Out Your Soul' which went straight to number one, their seventh in a row.
